Sapphire Stone Tiers — Natural, Lab-Grown, and Simulated

Sapphire is the non-red variety of corundum — the same mineral that produces ruby in its red form. Our collection features sapphire across three transparent stone tiers, with the specific tier disclosed on every product listing.

Natural sapphire

mined corundum with documented geological origin (Ceylon/Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Mozambique, Montana, Australia, and other sources). Available in select solid 14K gold and platinum pieces, and made-to-order on any piece through custom commission.

Lab-grown sapphire

chemically identical synthetic corundum with the same Mohs 9 hardness and optical properties as natural sapphire. Standard across most of our sterling silver, gold vermeil, and solid 14K gold pieces.

Simulated sapphire

typically blue spinel, blue topaz, or specialized crystal, available in select accessible-tier pieces. Disclosed clearly where used.

For natural sapphire commissions including specific origin requests, see Design Your Own Custom Ring.

Sapphire Comes in Every Color

This is one of sapphire's most distinctive qualities — sapphire exists in nearly every color except red (red corundum is by definition ruby). Each variety has its own commercial cluster and aesthetic positioning.

Blue sapphire

is the default sapphire — the color most people picture and the most established bridal stone. Blue sapphire ranges from pale blue through deep royal blue, with mid-tone saturated cornflower blue commanding the highest pricing. Our standard sapphire engagement rings and wedding bands feature blue sapphire unless otherwise specified. See sapphire engagement rings and sapphire wedding bands.

Pink sapphire rings

sapphire with chromium and titanium producing saturated pink. The most popular alternative-color sapphire, positioned as a more durable pink stone than morganite at more accessible pricing than ruby.

White sapphire rings

colorless sapphire, positioned as the premier natural diamond alternative. Mohs 9 hardness with significantly more accessible pricing than diamond at any carat weight.

Padparadscha sapphire rings

the rare orange-pink sapphire variety named after the lotus blossom. The most prized non-blue sapphire color and one of the most heirloom-grade choices in our collection.

Teal sapphire rings

saturated blue-green sapphire, often from Montana and Madagascar origins. One of the fastest-growing alternative bridal choices in current fine jewelry trends.

Yellow sapphire, green sapphire, and parti sapphire (multi-color stones)

are available through custom commission via Design Your Own Custom Ring.

Sapphire Hardness and Daily Wear

Sapphire ranks 9 on the Mohs hardness scale — the same hardness as ruby (both stones are corundum). Only diamond (10) and moissanite (9.25) are harder. Sapphire handles daily wear reliably in any setting without protective requirements. For complete care guidance, see our jewelry care guide.

Sapphire Color, Meaning, and Origin

The most prized blue sapphire color is mid-tone, vivid saturated blue with slight violet undertones — historically called "cornflower blue." Royal blue and Kashmir blue are premium origin-specific descriptors. Sapphire meaningcarries layered symbolism — wisdom, royal authority, faithfulness, sincerity, and the depth of committed love. Documented across royal and ecclesiastical traditions for over two thousand years.

Ceylon sapphire (from Sri Lanka) is the most historically prized origin. Montana sapphire has emerged as the premium American origin, particularly known for teal and parti sapphire varieties. Madagascar sapphire is the dominant modern commercial source. For origin-specific commissions, see Design Your Own Custom Ring.

Orion Nebula™ & Cornflower Sapphire Leaf Couples Ring Set by Aquamarise showcasing a silver band with a vibrant cornflower sapphire center stone surrounded by delicate leaf and diamond accents, part of Matching Couples' Rings, September Birthstone Jewelry, and Leaf Rings collections.
