About the lab-created black fire opal
The center stone is a lab-created black fire opal — real opal material grown under controlled laboratory conditions rather than mined from the earth. Lab-created opal shares the same fundamental composition as natural opal (hydrated silica spheres arranged to diffract light) and produces the same play-of-color effect you see in the photographs. The advantage of lab-created over natural mined black fire opal: dramatically more accessible pricing, more consistent color quality, and zero mining footprint.
"Black fire opal" is a specific look — a deep black or very dark base body color shot through with intense red, orange, and crimson play-of-color. It's the rarest natural opal color combination and one of the most visually dramatic stones in jewelry. The lab-created version captures the same effect: the deep black absorbs light around the perimeter while the internal fire flashes red and crimson as the stone moves under your hand. No two opals — natural or lab-created — show exactly the same fire pattern; the play-of-color is the point of the stone, not a flaw of it.
About the natural black onyx accents
Four small natural black onyx rounds are set at the cardinal points of the framework — one at the apex above the opal, one at the base below, and two more at the corners of the setting. The black onyx picks up the deep black tone of the opal's base and frames the central crimson fire with quiet, grounding dark points around the perimeter. The onyx is genuine, naturally mined black onyx — not dyed, not simulated.
Some competing listings mislabel onyx as "black diamond"; we don't. The black accents here are honestly identified as natural onyx. If you'd prefer real black diamond accents on a solid 14K rose gold custom version of this ring, message us before ordering and we can quote the upgrade.
About the CZ trillion accents
Two trillion-cut (triangular) simulated diamonds (cubic zirconia/CZ) flank the center stone at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions. The trillion cuts create the only bright white accents in the ring's color story — a deliberate contrast against the deep black-and-crimson center and the warm rose gold around it. The angled triangular shape echoes the dramatic geometry of vintage Victorian jewelry without crossing into art deco territory.
If you'd prefer lab-grown diamond or natural diamond trillions on a solid 14K gold custom version, message us before ordering for a custom quote.
About the vintage Victorian filigree
The shoulders of the band carry hand-finished filigree scrollwork — open metalwork in curving, vine-like patterns that flow into the center mount. Filigree is one of the oldest decorative metalsmithing techniques, common in Victorian (1837–1901), Edwardian (1901–1910), and art nouveau (1890–1910) jewelry. The pattern here reads as Victorian-romantic — flowing organic curves rather than the geometric symmetry of art deco filigree — which suits the warm rose gold and the gothic-romantic stone combination.
The filigree shoulders also do practical work: they catch light from multiple angles, give the slim band visual weight on the finger, and frame the center setting without the heaviness of a solid-metal mount. Most vintage opal engagement rings used filigree shoulders for exactly this reason.
About the 14K rose gold vermeil
The ring is 14K rose gold vermeil over solid 925 sterling silver. Vermeil is a specific jewelry construction: solid sterling silver as the core (not base metal), with 14K rose gold bonded over it. The result is the warm, dusty-pink rose gold tone you see in the photographs, with solid sterling silver underneath. The rose gold tone is especially flattering against black-and-crimson stones — the warm metal balances the cool darkness of the opal and onyx with a softer pink-gold counterpoint.
Standard jewelry care applies: remove before showering, swimming, or applying lotions, and store in a soft pouch when not worn. If you'd like the same ring in solid 14K rose gold as a lifetime/heirloom piece, message us — we can quote it.
How to wear it
This ring was built primarily as an engagement ring, but its versatility extends beyond that:
- Engagement ring — the primary role, especially for buyers drawn to gothic-romantic, witchy, or alternative bridal aesthetics rather than the standard white-diamond solitaire
- Promise ring — the substantial 1.4ct opal and deliberate filigree construction give the ring the weight of a serious commitment piece
- October birthstone ring — opal is the traditional October birthstone, making this a natural anniversary or birthday piece for an October birthday or 14th wedding anniversary (opal being a recognized 14th-anniversary stone)
- Right-hand statement ring — for buyers who already have an engagement ring but want a vintage gothic-romantic piece for the right hand
For an engagement ring pairing, the ring stacks beautifully with a curved or chevron contour wedding band — the cardinal-point onyx accent at the base of the setting gives the contour band a natural nesting line below the center stone. Match in rose gold for a unified bridal stack, or contrast with yellow gold or white-metal contour bands for a deliberate two-tone look.

Sizing & care
True to size and comfort-fit. If you don't know your size, message us before ordering — we can send a complimentary ring sizer.
Opal requires more careful daily wear than harder gemstones — it sits at about 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, softer than sapphire or quartz. The lab-created opal has the same hardness characteristics as natural opal. Recommendations: remove the ring for any activity that risks impact (gardening, weightlifting, cleaning, washing dishes), avoid harsh chemicals and household cleaners, never use ultrasonic cleaners, and don't expose the opal to extreme temperature changes (very hot to very cold water, for example). Clean with a soft cloth and warm water only. With sensible care, an opal engagement ring holds up well — many vintage opal rings from the Victorian era are still in active wear over a century later. The key is treating it gently.
Vermeil and natural onyx benefit from the same care routine: remove before showering, swimming, gardening, or applying lotions and perfumes. Store the ring separately in a soft pouch so the prongs don't catch on other jewelry.
Frequently asked questions
Is the black fire opal real?
Yes — it's a real lab-created opal. Lab-created opal is genuine opal material (hydrated silica with the same play-of-color structure as natural opal), grown under controlled laboratory conditions rather than mined from the earth. It shares the same fundamental composition and visual properties as natural opal. The "fire opal" designation refers to the intense red and crimson play-of-color flashing through the deep black base.
What's the difference between natural and lab-created black fire opal?
Both are real opal — same chemistry, same play-of-color mechanism. Lab-created opal is grown in a controlled environment over weeks; natural opal forms over millions of years underground. The visual effect (the fire pattern) is comparable. The main differences are price (lab-created is dramatically more accessible) and color consistency (lab-created produces more uniform fire patterns; natural opals vary more from stone to stone). Both wear and care the same way.
Are the black accents black diamonds?
No — the small black accents at the cardinal points of the setting are natural black onyx, not black diamond. We're explicit about this so the listing is honest. Some competing listings mislabel onyx as "black diamond"; we don't. If you'd prefer real black diamond cardinal accents on a solid 14K rose gold custom version of this ring, message us before ordering and we can quote the upgrade.
Are the trillion accents real diamonds?
No — the two trillion (triangular) cut accents flanking the center stone are simulated diamond (cubic zirconia/CZ). If you'd prefer lab-grown diamond or natural diamond trillions on a solid 14K gold custom version, message us before ordering for a custom quote.
What does the fire opal symbolize?
Opal has been associated with love, passion, and emotional intensity across many cultures — the play-of-color was traditionally seen as fire trapped inside the stone. In Victorian jewelry specifically, opal was a popular engagement ring stone for buyers who wanted symbolism more dramatic than a colorless diamond. Black fire opal carries the same symbolism with deeper, more intense tones — the gothic-romantic version of the opal engagement ring tradition.
How big is the center stone?
9.0 × 6.0 mm oval cabochon, approximately 1.4 carats. Oval cabochons spread wider than they are deep, so the stone reads larger on the finger than its carat weight suggests. The vintage filigree framework around it also adds visible size to the overall setting footprint.
How durable is opal for daily wear?
Opal is softer than most engagement ring stones — about 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, softer than sapphire (9), diamond (10), or even quartz (7). It can still serve as an engagement ring with sensible care: avoid impact, harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and extreme temperature changes. Many Victorian-era opal engagement rings are still in active wear today — opal can absolutely last as a daily-wear ring, it just needs gentler treatment than harder stones.
What is vermeil?
Vermeil is a specific jewelry construction: solid sterling silver as the core (not base metal), with 14K gold bonded over it. The result is genuine 14K gold tone with sterling silver underneath. This ring is 14K rose gold vermeil — meaning solid sterling silver underneath, 14K rose gold over it.
What's the difference between this and a solid gold version?
Vermeil is accessible-pricing — solid sterling silver core, 14K rose gold over it. Solid 14K rose gold is the heirloom-tier version: gold throughout, no sterling core, holds resale value, never needs replating, built to last a lifetime. If you'd prefer the solid 14K rose gold version of this ring, message us before ordering for a custom quote.
Is this a Victorian-style or art deco design?
Victorian. The filigree scrollwork on the shoulders flows in curving, organic, vine-like patterns — characteristic of Victorian and art nouveau jewelry. Art deco filigree tends toward geometric symmetry (straight lines, repeating angles), which this ring deliberately doesn't do. The trillion-cut accent stones add a slightly more modern geometric note, but the overall silhouette reads as Victorian-romantic.
Will this ring stack with a curved or contour wedding band?
Yes. The cardinal-point onyx accent at the base of the setting gives a curved or chevron contour band a natural nesting line below the center stone. Match in 14K rose gold vermeil for a unified bridal stack, or contrast with yellow gold or white-metal contour bands for a deliberate two-tone look. Message us if you'd like a matching contour band designed specifically for this ring.
Can I wear this as a promise ring or right-hand ring?
Absolutely. The 1.4ct center stone and deliberate vintage Victorian construction give the ring the weight of a serious commitment piece, but it also works as a statement right-hand ring for buyers who already have an engagement ring.
Will sterling silver under the vermeil turn my finger green?
No. Genuine 925 sterling silver does not turn skin green — and this ring's sterling silver core sits underneath the 14K rose gold vermeil layer, so it doesn't contact skin directly anyway. Skin reactions are caused by low-quality base metals, not real 925.
Do you offer this in solid 14K rose gold?
Yes — message us before ordering and we can quote a solid 14K rose, yellow, or white gold version of the same design. On the gold version, the accents can also be upgraded: real black diamond cardinals replacing the natural onyx, lab-grown or natural diamond trillions replacing the CZ. The fully upgraded solid 14K gold version is the all-natural-stones heirloom configuration.
Are the stones ethically sourced?
Yes. The lab-created opal has no mining footprint (grown in a lab). The natural black onyx accents are ethically sourced and conflict-free. The CZ trillions are ethically sourced synthetic stones.
What's included in the box?
