About the natural aquamarine

The center stone is a natural mined aquamarine — formed underground over millions of years, mined from the earth, then cut and polished into the marquise shape you see here. Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family (the same mineral family as emerald and morganite) with a hardness of 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale and the natural soft blue-aqua tone that gives the gemstone its name ("aqua marina" or "water of the sea" in Latin).

Most natural aquamarine in the fine jewelry market — including the stone in this ring — is heat-treated at low temperatures to deepen the blue tone and eliminate any residual green undertone. This is the industry standard for aquamarine, has been for decades, is entirely permanent and stable, and does not affect the stone's durability or value. The rough material itself is genuine natural aquamarine; the treatment only refines the color toward the preferred sea-blue rather than the slightly greener tone of untreated rough.

Important distinction: natural aquamarine is a different category from lab-grown aquamarine (real aquamarine grown in a lab — also offered in our vermeil version of this design) and from simulated aquamarine (different stone material that looks similar). Natural mined aquamarine is the heirloom-tier center stone — same chemistry as lab-grown, same hardness, but with the inherent value premium of a stone that was mined rather than grown.

About the marquise cut

The marquise (or navette) cut is an elongated oval with pointed ends — one of the oldest fancy stone shapes in jewelry, dating to the 18th century and originally cut for Louis XV. Worn vertically as set here, the marquise elongates the finger visually and gives the stone more upright presence than a round or oval cut of the same carat weight would. The pointed ends echo the lotus petal shapes that frame the setting, creating a unified botanical silhouette across the entire ring.

About the moissanite accents

The small accent stones tucked into the points of the lotus framework are moissanite — silicon carbide, originally discovered in meteorite fragments and now grown in laboratories for jewelry use. Moissanite has a hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs scale (between sapphire at 9 and diamond at 10), excellent durability for daily wear, and a refractive index slightly higher than diamond, giving it more fire (rainbow flash) than a similarly sized diamond.

Important distinction: moissanite is not a diamond, not a simulated diamond, and not a lab-grown diamond. It's its own distinct gemstone — real moissanite with its own optical and physical properties. It's the most popular non-diamond engagement ring stone because of how closely it resembles diamond visually (often more brilliant) and how dramatically more accessible it is at scale. About the Celtic knot vine band

Both shoulders of the band carry open metalwork in a Celtic knot pattern flowing into a twisted vine that wraps toward the center setting. The Celtic knot is one of the oldest decorative motifs in jewelry — interwoven strands that loop back on themselves with no beginning or end, traditionally read as a symbol of eternity, continuity, and unbroken love. It's been used in Celtic engagement and wedding jewelry for over a thousand years.

The twisted vine layered into the design adds the nature-inspired/fairycore character — the band reads less like architectural metalwork and more like vines growing wild around the central flower. In solid 14K yellow gold, the Celtic knot openwork reads with more substantial weight and presence than the same pattern in vermeil — the metal's density gives the open scrollwork a fuller, heirloom feel on the finger.

About the lotus and butterfly framework

The setting frame around the center aquamarine is built from sculpted yellow-gold scrollwork that reads as a lotus flower in profile — petal-shaped metalwork at the apex (top of the setting) and at the base, with smaller wing-like elements flanking the center stone at 3 and 9 o'clock. Avoid impact on hard surfaces — the pointed ends of the marquise cut are the most vulnerable part of the stone and can chip on a sharp knock. Clean with warm water and a soft brush; skip ultrasonic cleaners on the prong settings. A soft jewelry cloth keeps the yellow gold tone bright. The open Celtic knot metalwork has some natural give and small spaces that can collect lotion, dust, and skin oils over time — periodic gentle cleaning with a soft toothbrush in warm soapy water keeps the openwork pattern crisp.
