What Is Alexandrite?
A chameleon variety of an otherwise quiet mineral.
Alexandrite is the color-changing variety of chrysoberyl, a beryllium aluminum oxide. Ordinary chrysoberyl is a yellow-green to brownish stone that rarely makes headlines. Add a trace of chromium in place of some of the aluminum, and the crystal begins absorbing light in a way that makes it look green under one light source and red under another. Only chrysoberyl with a visible color change earns the name alexandrite; the rest is simply chrysoberyl.
That chromium is also why the stone is so rare. Per the Gemological Institute of America, alexandrite forms only where beryllium and chromium meet in the same rock, two elements that almost never occur together in nature. Most cut stones weigh under a carat, and fine material with a strong change is scarcer than diamond. A Short History of Alexandrite
From an emerald mine in the Urals to the jewelry boxes of the Russian court.
The story starts in 1830 along the Tokovaya River in Russia's Ural Mountains. Miners working the emerald deposits pulled out green crystals that looked like the emeralds they were digging for, until the light changed and the stones turned red. The Finnish mineralogist Nils Gustaf Nordenskiöld examined the material and initially proposed the name "diaphanite." Count Lev Perovskii had other ideas and presented the gem to the imperial court under the name alexandrite, honoring the future Czar Alexander II, who came of age in 1834.
The timing was a gift to the stone's reputation. Red and green were the colors of the Russian imperial military, so a gem that showed both became a patriotic emblem almost overnight. By the 1890s George Frederick Kunz, Tiffany & Co.'s gemologist, was buying Ural alexandrite in quantity, and the firm set it in the platinum and gold rings that defined the era.
The Russian mines were largely exhausted by the early twentieth century, and for decades the stone was more legend than product. That changed in 1987 with the discovery of a major deposit at Hematita in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Brazil, Sri Lanka and East Africa now supply most natural alexandrite, though gem dealers still hold Russian stones as the color standard. Why Alexandrite Changes Color
The alexandrite effect, explained without the physics degree.
Chromium ions inside the crystal absorb light strongly in the yellow part of the spectrum, in a band centered near 580 nanometers, while letting both green and red wavelengths pass through. Because the stone blocks the middle of the rainbow, the color you see depends on what the light source contains most of.
- Daylight and fluorescent light are rich in blue and green wavelengths. The stone transmits those, and your eye reads green to bluish green.
- Incandescent light and candlelight are heavy on the red end. The stone transmits red instead, and it reads purplish red, raspberry or wine.
- LED lighting varies by bulb. Warm-white LEDs usually pull the stone toward its red phase; cool-white LEDs keep it green. This is why a ring can look different in two rooms of the same house.
Two things separate a spectacular stone from a disappointing one. First, the absorption band has to sit at exactly the right position and width; if iron creeps into the crystal, the change turns muddy and brownish. Second, alexandrite is also strongly pleochroic, showing green, orange and purple-red from different crystal directions. Hardness of 8.5 means nothing you meet in an ordinary day, from keys and coins to glass, is hard enough to scratch it. Hardness and toughness are different things, though. A hard, sharp knock at the wrong angle can still chip any gem, so an active wearer should favor a bezel or a six-prong setting that protects the girdle. Most sapphires are heated and nearly all emeralds are oiled; natural alexandrite is essentially always untreated, so there is no filler to dry out and no coating to wear away. How Alexandrite Quality Is Judged
Color change first, then everything else.
- Strength of the color change. Dealers grade it from weak through moderate, strong and very strong, usually expressed as a percentage of the stone's area that visibly shifts. A stone that goes clean bluish green to clean purplish red is worth many times one that drifts from grayish green to brownish red. This single factor moves price more than all the others combined.
- Hue and saturation in each phase. The ideal daylight color is a vivid bluish green; the ideal incandescent color is a purplish red without brown. Both should be saturated. A stone can technically change color and still look dull in both lights.
- Clarity. Alexandrite is a Type II gem in the GIA clarity system, meaning some inclusions are normal. Eye-clean stones command a premium, but a strong color change outranks clarity. Fine needle inclusions can even produce a cat's-eye effect, which is prized in its own right.
- Cut. Rough is small and expensive, so cutters prioritize weight and color orientation over ideal proportions. Ovals and cushions dominate for that reason. A well-oriented stone shows the best change face-up; a poorly oriented one shows its weakest pleochroic color.
- Carat weight. Price per carat climbs steeply with size because clean natural rough above two carats is genuinely rare. Most center stones fall between 0.5 and 1.5 carats.
- Origin. Russian stones carry a historical premium, and Brazilian material is prized for vivid shifts. Sri Lankan stones tend to be larger but often show a weaker, olive-to-brownish change.
How Much Does Alexandrite Cost?
Natural stones are priced like fine art. Lab-grown changes the math entirely.
Natural alexandrite with a strong change is one of the most expensive colored gems per carat. The International Gem Society puts top-quality natural stones under one carat at an average of about $1,818 per carat, rising to about $6,667 per carat in the one-to-two-carat range. Above that the market thins out fast, and documented Russian stones with certificates can reach five figures per carat.

What pushes a natural stone toward the top of its range: a very strong, clean change; vivid saturation in both phases; eye-clean clarity; and a lab report confirming natural origin. Three words that sound alike and mean very different things.
Natural alexandrite
Formed in the earth, usually small, usually included, and priced accordingly. Its value rests on rarity and provenance as much as on beauty. If you are paying natural prices, insist on an independent report from GIA, AGL or Gübelin that states the stone is natural.
Lab-grown (synthetic) alexandrite
Real alexandrite grown in a laboratory, most often by the Czochralski pulling method or by flux growth. It has the same beryllium aluminum oxide chemistry, the same chromium coloring, the same 8.5 hardness and the same green-to-red change. Because the growth conditions are controlled, lab-grown stones are typically cleaner and larger than natural ones, and they cost a small fraction of the price. They must be disclosed as laboratory-created. Simulated or imitation alexandrite
Not alexandrite at all. The most common imitation is color-change synthetic sapphire (corundum doped with vanadium), followed by color-change glass and cubic zirconia. Vintage jewelry from the mid-twentieth century is full of "alexandrite" that is actually synthetic sapphire. The tell is the direction of the change: these materials usually shift from a sapphire-like blue in daylight to purple under a lamp, not from green to red. Alexandrite joined the official birthstone list in 1952, when the Jewelry Industry Council of America updated the roster, and it now shares June with pearl and moonstone. Low maintenance for a stone this rare.
- Routine cleaning: warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth.
- Ultrasonic and steam: generally safe for alexandrite itself, unlike emerald or opal. Check the setting first, since vermeil and delicate pavé prefer the soap-and-water method.
- Chemicals: take the ring off for bleach, chlorine and household cleaners. They rarely harm the stone but they attack metal and finishes.
- Storage: keep it in its own pouch. At 8.5 it will scratch softer gems such as moonstone, pearl and opal.

- Decide natural or lab-grown first. It sets the budget ceiling and every decision after it.
- Demand two-light evidence. Photos or a short video of the actual stone in daylight and under an incandescent lamp. Stock images tell you nothing.
- Judge the direction of the change. Green to red is alexandrite. Blue to purple is almost always color-change sapphire.
- Buy the change before the carat. A vivid 0.8-carat stone outperforms a muddy 1.5-carat one on the hand and in resale.
- Check clarity face-up, not under a loupe. Some inclusions are normal; clouding is not.
