Ruby — The Stone Called King

Ruby has been called the king of gemstones for longer than most gemstones have had names. The deep red carries a warmth no other stone in the spectrum produces with the same intensity, and at Mohs 9 hardness — second only to diamond and moissanite — ruby is one of the few colored gemstones genuinely built for daily wear in any setting. As a ruby gemstone in fine jewelry, ruby sits in the small category of stones — alongside diamond, moissanite, and sapphire — hard enough for daily wear in any setting without protective compromise. For buyers who want a stone with both visual presence and durability to handle real life, Aquamarise® ruby jewelry sits in a category of its own.

Every Aquamarise® ruby piece is handcrafted using recycled metals and responsibly sourced stones with verified Mohs hardness and honest care guidance on every listing. 4.9 stars from 38,000+ verified reviews.

Lab-Grown Ruby and Natural Ruby - Two Honest Tiers

Aquamarise® ruby jewelry is offered across two transparent stone tiers, each disclosed clearly on every product listing.

Lab-grown ruby

is the standard across our collection. Lab-grown ruby is genuine corundum — chemically identical to natural ruby, with the same Mohs 9 hardness, the same chromium coloring, and the same optical properties. The only difference is that lab-grown ruby was produced under controlled laboratory conditions instead of mined from the earth. The price difference reflects production process, not visible quality. Every sterling silver, gold vermeil, black ruthenium, and most solid 14K gold pieces in this collection feature lab-grown ruby.

Natural ruby

is mined corundum with documented geological origin — primarily from Mozambique, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, and Madagascar. Natural ruby is available in select solid 14K gold and platinum pieces within this collection, and is available made-to-order on any piece through custom commission. An additional fee applies depending on stone size, color saturation, and origin. For natural ruby commissions, see Design Your Own Custom Ring.

Ruby Origins - Burmese, Mozambique, Thai, and Madagascar

Ruby's geographic origin significantly affects color, value, and aesthetic character.

Burmese ruby (from Myanmar) is the most historically prized ruby origin, producing the legendary pigeon blood ruby— pure red with slight blue undertones reading as intensely luminous. True Burmese ruby commands the highest pricing across all ruby origins, and "Burmese color" now describes equivalent saturation from other premium sources.

Mozambique ruby has emerged as the most significant commercial source over the past two decades, producing fine-quality ruby with saturation rivaling Burmese material at more accessible pricing. Mozambique ruby has become the dominant origin for premium fine jewelry across major global markets.

Thai ruby historically produced darker, more garnet-like ruby — most commercially active during the mid-20th century. Madagascar ruby completes the major commercial sources, producing ruby across the full color spectrum from pale to deeply saturated.

For most pieces, origin is documented on the product listing where available. For natural ruby commissions with specific origin requests, see Design Your Own Custom Ring.

Ruby Hardness and Daily Wear

Ruby ranks 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it the second-hardest colored gemstone in fine jewelry behind only sapphire (which is the same mineral, corundum, in non-red varieties). Only diamond (Mohs 10) and moissanite (Mohs 9.25) are harder. This places ruby firmly in the daily-wear category for any jewelry format including engagement rings, wedding bands, and stacking rings — no protective bezel or specialized setting is required for ruby to handle everyday contact reliably.

Both lab-grown and natural ruby share this Mohs 9 hardness rating. For complete care guidance, see our jewelry care guide and warranty and care guide.

Ruby Color and Quality

Ruby color is graded across hue, tone, and saturation — the three factors that determine value at every quality tier.

Hue ranges from pure red through slightly purplish-red and slightly orangish-red. The most prized ruby color is pigeon blood ruby — a pure red with slight blue undertones that reads as luminous and intensely saturated.

Tone describes the lightness or darkness of the red. Mid-tone is the most valuable; rubies that read too dark appear almost garnet-like, while rubies that read too light lack the dramatic visual impact ruby is known for.

Saturation is the purity and intensity of color. Highly saturated ruby reads as almost glowing under direct light — the visual signature that has made ruby one of the most enduring fine-jewelry stones across every era and culture that has worked with colored gemstones.

Lab-grown ruby allows full control over these factors, which means Aquamarise® lab-grown ruby pieces consistently display the saturated, mid-tone, pure red that drives ruby's appeal — at a fraction of the price natural ruby commands at the same color quality.

Ruby Value, Cut, and Carat

Ruby value is determined by the four classical gemstone factors — color (the dominant value driver), clarity, cut, and carat weight — with color holding outsized weight compared to other fine gemstones.

Ruby cut affects how color reads. Brilliant cuts (round, oval, cushion) maximize sparkle and brilliance through faceted reflections. Step cuts (emerald cut, baguette) emphasize color depth through broad open facets. Mixed cuts combine both approaches. Lab-grown ruby allows precision cutting that maximizes ruby's color saturation without natural-stone clarity constraints.

Ruby carat at fine quality commands significant price premiums above 1 carat for natural ruby, with prices escalating geometrically above 3 carats. Lab-grown ruby maintains accessible per-carat pricing across all carat weights, making larger ruby pieces (2-5 carats) genuinely affordable at fine quality grades.

Ruby quality at any carat weight is primarily determined by color (hue, tone, saturation) over inclusions — eye-clean ruby is the standard expectation in fine-quality grades, though some natural ruby inclusions are considered character marks rather than defects.

What Ruby Means — The Ruby Meaning

The ruby meaning carries some of the most layered symbolism in fine jewelry. Ancient cultures associated ruby with passion, courage, vitality, and the sun itself — the deep red reading symbolically as captured fire. Roman tradition treated ruby as a stone of protection in battle; medieval European tradition associated ruby with sustained love and the heart's capacity for devotion; Burmese tradition placed ruby above all other gemstones as the stone of victory and life-force.

Modern crystal traditions read ruby as a heart-chakra stone associated with courage in love, the deepening of romantic commitment, and the energy required to sustain meaningful relationships across decades. For engagement and wedding contexts specifically, ruby carries weight few other stones can match — the symbolism of passionate, committed love has been ruby's domain for over two thousand years of recorded jewelry tradition.

Across the Aquamarise® Ruby Collection

Our ruby collection spans every major bridal and gifting category.

Ruby engagement rings — solitaire, halo, three-stone, vintage, and Art Deco settings designed to display ruby's saturated red dramatically.

Ruby wedding bands — eternity, half-eternity, accent, and channel-set configurations for the ceremony and the 40th wedding anniversary tradition specifically.

Ruby couples rings — matched, coordinated, and his-and-hers configurations, plus ruby promise rings for couples shopping together.

Ruby necklaces, pendants, and earrings — including pieces like the Ethereal Hold Ruby Pendant Necklace in black ruthenium — are available across our gemstone necklaces and gemstone earrings collections. For specific custom necklace, pendant, and earring configurations, see Design Your Own Custom Ring.

For July birthstone context — including Cancer and Leo zodiac associations, the 40th wedding anniversary tradition, and complete gifting framework — see our July birthstone collection.

Ruby and Metal Pairings

Sterling silver and white gold preserve ruby's pure red at full saturation — the cleanest cool-metal presentation. See sterling silver jewelry.

Yellow gold and gold vermeil create the most classical ruby pairing — warm gold tones harmonize with ruby's red across centuries of fine jewelry tradition. The most historically prominent metal pairing for ruby. See yellow gold vermeil jewelry and gold vermeil jewelry.

Rose gold introduces softer warm tones for contemporary romantic aesthetics. See rose gold vermeil rings.

Black ruthenium creates maximum visual impact against ruby's deep red — the dark metal frame produces dramatic contrast that warm metals can't replicate. Black ruthenium ruby pieces in this collection draw on the Blood Moon symbolism of ruby in dark settings, particularly suited to wearers drawn to gothic-leaning fine jewelry aesthetics.

Solid 14K gold and platinum deliver heirloom-grade construction. Natural ruby is standard in select solid gold and platinum pieces. See solid gold rings.

For complete metal context, see our precious metal guide14K vs 18K gold guide, and what is gold vermeil.

Caring for Ruby Jewelry

Ruby at Mohs 9 is among the most resilient gemstones in fine jewelry. Standard care practices include lukewarm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth or soft brush. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are generally safe for ruby, though heat-sensitive treatments in some natural rubies (heat-treated to enhance color) make warm-only cleaning the safer practice. Avoid harsh chemicals (chlorine, bleach, ammonia) and remove ruby jewelry before manual work involving impact or chemical exposure.

For complete care guidance, see our jewelry care guide.
