Why "real" and "natural" are not the same thing.
This is not just a marketing claim — it is official. In 2018, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission revised its Jewelry Guides (16 CFR Part 23) and removed the word "natural" from the definition of a diamond. The updated definition reads, in essence, that "a diamond is a mineral consisting essentially of pure carbon crystallized in the isometric system" — with no requirement that it be mined. In other words, the government formally recognized that a lab-grown stone with the same properties as a mined one is a diamond.
The FTC does draw one clear line: sellers must disclose that a lab-grown diamond is not mined, using a qualifier such as "laboratory-grown," "laboratory-created," or "[maker]-created." Calling it simply a "diamond" with no qualifier is considered deceptive. How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Made
Two ways to grow a real diamond.
Both methods start with a tiny diamond "seed" and end with a real diamond crystal — in days to weeks rather than billions of years.
HPHT — High Pressure, High Temperature
HPHT recreates the deep-earth conditions that form natural diamonds, subjecting carbon to immense pressure and heat with a molten-metal catalyst until it crystallizes onto the seed. It is the original method, dating to the 1950s, and is also used to refine the color of some finished stones.
CVD — Chemical Vapor Deposition
CVD is the newer approach: a carbon-rich gas such as methane is energized into a plasma inside a vacuum chamber, and carbon atoms rain down to build the diamond up layer by layer. CVD stones sometimes get a follow-up HPHT treatment to refine their color.
Either way, the rough diamond is then cut, polished, and graded exactly like a mined one. The method — HPHT or CVD — is simply noted on the grading report.
Grading, Certification & Disclosure

Lab-grown diamonds are graded by the same respected laboratories — GIA and IGI chief among them — using the same 4Cs that define natural diamond quality. The GIA's 4Cs are:
- Cut — how well the stone is proportioned and polished; the biggest driver of sparkle.
- Color — graded from colorless (D) down the scale; less color is rarer and brighter.
- Clarity — how few internal inclusions and surface blemishes the stone has.
- Carat — the weight, and therefore the visual size, of the diamond.
The grading report clearly states the stone is laboratory-grown, and most lab diamonds carry a microscopic laser inscription reading "lab grown" on the girdle, tied to their certificate. When buying, look for a reputable certificate and clear disclosure — that is your guarantee of exactly what you are getting.

The trade-off is resale value.
