Why Tungsten
Tungsten carbide sits around 8.5–9 on the Mohs scale, several times harder than gold or titanium, so the finish still looks like this after years of daily work where a precious-metal band would have gone soft with scratches. It is also heavy in the hand, which most people read as quality.
The trade-off is worth knowing before you buy: tungsten cannot be resized, and it cannot be bent. Under enough force it fractures rather than deforming. Care
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry. A mirror-polished black band shows fingerprints, so a quick wipe is the whole routine; skip polishing compounds and silver cloths, which are abrasive and will dull the black and scratch the resin over the opal. Keep it out of chlorinated pools and away from bleach and solvents. Take it off for heavy lifting: tungsten resists scratches, but a hard impact against concrete or steel can crack it. Is this a fire opal?
No. Fire opal is the name for opal with an orange, red or yellow body color. This is lab-created opal with a blue body color and green and violet flash.
Will the inlay look exactly like the photo?
Close, but not identical. The flakes settle differently in every band, so the density and the size of individual pieces vary. The width, the finish and the channel are the same on every ring.
How wide is the opal channel?
Most of the 8mm face. The two black rails on either side are narrow, so the opal reads as the band rather than as a stripe on it.
Can it be resized?
No. Tungsten carbide cannot be resized. The material is far too hard to stretch or cut and rejoin. Order carefully, and size down rather than up if you are between sizes.
What does comfort fit mean?
The inside of the band is gently domed instead of flat, so less surface touches your finger. It slides on more easily and runs slightly large, so many people take a quarter to a half size smaller.
Will the black wear off?
The black is bonded into the tungsten carbide rather than painted on, so it does not chip or flake. Keep it away from abrasive polishes, which are the one thing that dulls a polished black finish.
Will it scratch?
Barely. Tungsten carbide is 8.5 to 9 on the Mohs scale, harder than steel and several times harder than gold. A polished surface shows fingerprints and very fine marks, which wipe off; deep scratches are unlikely.
Can it crack?
Yes, under a hard enough impact. Tungsten is hard rather than tough, so it fractures instead of bending. That also means the ring can be removed in an emergency in seconds.
Is it safe for sensitive skin?
Yes. Tungsten carbide is hypoallergenic and contains no nickel.
Is this only for men?
