The Design
Nerida is named for the sea nymphs of Greek myth. The oval sits north to south in four prongs inside a pointed, kite-shaped frame. Leaves are engraved into the black metal on every side of the stone, and the band splits in two as it reaches the frame, with a leaf and three small stones on each shoulder.
If you are looking past a plain solitaire, our guides to fantasy engagement rings and non-traditional engagement rings map the wider field.
The Lavender Opal
The center stone is lab-grown opal with a lavender body color. It is cut as a smooth domed cabochon, which is how opal shows its play of color: patches of violet, electric blue and teal that shift as the stone turns in the light. No two stones carry the same pattern.
Opal is the October birthstone. Our guide to opal engagement rings covers types, durability and care, opal meaning covers what each color stands for, and the October birthstone guide has more on opal as a gift.
Metal and Stones
The ring is solid 925 sterling silver with a black ruthenium finish, a platinum-group metal that settles to a deep gunmetal rather than a flat black. Against it the opal reads brighter than it would on silver. The small round accents are simulated diamonds (cubic zirconia).

Care
Opal is softer than most ring stones, 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, so it asks for a little care. Take the ring off for the gym, gardening and heavy cleaning. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and household chemicals, which can harm the opal and dull the ruthenium finish, and store the ring in its velvet box rather than loose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the opal natural?
No. It is lab-grown opal. It shows a true play of color, with a brighter and more even pattern than most mined opal at this price.
What colors does the opal show?
A lavender body with flashes of violet, electric blue and teal. The pattern shifts as the stone moves, and every stone is slightly different.
Will my stone look exactly like the photos?
It will be very close in color, but the pattern of flashes is unique to each opal, so no two rings are identical.
What are the small white stones?
They are simulated diamonds (cubic zirconia), not diamonds.
Is opal durable enough for an engagement ring?
Opal is 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than sapphire or spinel. It works as an engagement ring with sensible care: remove it for manual work and avoid hard knocks.
Is opal a birthstone?
Yes. Opal is the October birthstone.
How big is the center stone?
5.5 × 10 mm, an oval cabochon set north to south so the length runs along the finger.
How dark is the black ruthenium finish?
Ruthenium settles to a deep gunmetal rather than a flat jet black. The slight reflectivity keeps the engraved leaves visible instead of flattening them.
What is the ring made of?
Solid 925 sterling silver with a black ruthenium finish. No brass or base metal.
Does this ring come with other stones?
Yes. The same Nerida design is also made with a Paraiba blue lab-grown spinel. Use the gemstone swatches on this page to switch between them.
What sizes are available?
Sizes 4 through 11, including every half size.
Can I have it engraved?
Yes. Engraving is available on the inner band, up to 16 characters, and can be added as an option at checkout.
Are the stones ethically sourced?
Yes. The opal is lab-grown, so no mining is involved, and all Aquamarise stones are conflict-free and responsibly sourced. Every order arrives in a free luxury velvet jewelry box.
