Two crescent moons face the center stone, each pavé-set and edged in milgrain beading, with a four-point star sitting further out on each shoulder. The Lab-Grown Ruby
Ruby is corundum — the red variety — and corundum is a 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond. On a ring worn every day, and especially on a hand that works, that hardness matters more than almost any other property. Our guide to what ruby means covers the history behind it.
This stone is lab-grown, with the same chemistry, hardness and optical behavior as mined corundum, in a saturated blood red. Against black metal it reads hotter and more concentrated than it would against bright silver — there is nothing competing with it. It is bezel-set — the metal wraps the girdle completely rather than gripping it with prongs. On a band worn hard that means nothing catches, nothing snags, and there are no prongs to wear down. Ruthenium is a platinum-group metal, the same family as rhodium and platinum, and it is the harder of the two common black finishes — which is why we use it rather than black rhodium. It plates as a genuinely dark gunmetal rather than a tinted gray, and it holds that color under daily wear.

Care
Ruby is 9 on the Mohs scale and among the most durable stones for daily wear. Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, paying attention to the pavé where skin oils collect, then dry with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive polishes and silver polishing cloths — both will thin a dark finish — and keep the ring out of chlorinated water. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner.

Will the black finish wear off?
Not with normal wear. Ruthenium is hard and bonds well to sterling silver. Like any plated finish it can thin after years of daily contact — keep it away from chlorine and abrasive polishes, and we can refinish the ring if it ever needs it.
Is the ruby real?
Yes. It is a genuine ruby — corundum — lab-grown rather than mined. Identical chemistry, hardness and color behavior. The difference is origin, not authenticity.
Why lab-grown rather than natural?
A saturated red at this size would be rare and very costly in mined corundum. Lab-grown gives the same material and the same 9 Mohs hardness at a fraction of the price, with a known origin.
Are the pavé stones diamonds?
No. The small stones in the crescents and stars are cubic zirconia. Moissanite or lab-grown diamond accents are available as a custom order.
What does bezel-set mean, and why here?
The metal wraps around the whole girdle of the stone instead of holding it with prongs. On a band worn every day it means nothing snags on fabric and there are no prongs to wear thin or catch.
