The Stones
Ruby is corundum, a 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond. These rubies are lab-grown: the same chemistry and hardness as mined corundum, in a saturated red that would be rare and costly mined. Ruby is the July birthstone; our guide to what ruby means covers the history.
The black onyx is natural chalcedony, 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, in a solid opaque black with no banding. The small white stones on her ring are cubic zirconia; moissanite or lab-grown diamond accents are available as a custom order.
Sterling Silver With a Rhodium Finish
Every ring in the set is solid 925 sterling silver, hallmarked, with a rhodium finish. Rhodium is a platinum-group metal; as a finish it gives the bright white color and acts as a barrier against tarnish, so these rings do not darken the way bare silver does. After years of daily wear the finish can thin at the high points, and the rings can be refinished. There is no brass, nickel or base metal anywhere in the set.

Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, paying attention to the carved leaves and the undersides of the settings where lotion collects, then dry with a soft cloth. Skip silver polishing cloths and abrasive compounds, which wear the rhodium finish, and keep the rings out of chlorinated water. Onyx is porous, so keep it away from bleach and solvents.
